Our 131st Year Distributed Energy System FOR THE SAN LUIS VALLEY Monday, November 15 - 6:30 p.m. at the Ute Theatre Last year, the big solar com- parties started coming here Colo- rado's San Luis Valley - Tessera Solar proposing 1,500 acres of noisy 3&foot tall devices, and So- lar Reserve proposing a 650-foot tower directly west of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Monday night at the Ute, I'll describe a citizens' power plant - a network of ordinary solar pan- els in clusters from rooftop size up to the scale of the 8 Megawatt facility near Mosca. The total size of the planned project is similar - about 150 Megawatts, or 25 Megawatts in each of the Val- lets six counties, batteries can be used to buffer short term fluc- tuations, retrofit dams for power storage and geothermal for back- up power at night and on cloudy days. The following day - Tuesday, Noveanber 16 at 2:35 p.m., I'll be presenting this plan to the Sag- uache County Commissioners. We'll also be viewing an incred- ible 22-minute DVD by SLV pho- ographer Joe Zinn, showing the incredible beauty of the valley we love. There will be time for a "town hall' style meeting to dis- cuss his plan and a community .response to Tessera and Solar Reserve. Says Stabe Senator Gall Sch- ,wartz, "I'm a strong supporter of distributed generation because it saves money for the consumer with lower infrastructure costs and gives communities control over their energy prices and gen- eration." How can distributed solar be bet- ter than a centralized solar plant? 1. More jobs are created per dol- lar spent 2. Communities will own the ar- rays 3. It's more cost-effective 4. Impacts are less concentrated 5. Power production is more con- sistent 6. Silicon solar panels work best in our cool sunshine 7. Benefits to local businesses 8. Less need for transmission lines 9. Our viewseape and sound- scape are preserved, and less wa- ter is needed 10. It's something we can all agree on (see http: //blog.solargardens.org/ 2Ol0/distribed-energy-system-for san-luis.html) Sincerely, Joy Hughes Calling All MVS Graduates Pearl Brewer, MVS School Coun- selor, has created a "Wall of Fame" located in the high school wing at Mountain Valey School. This wall is designated to display the names of any MVS high school graduate who went on to graduate from college/trade/vocational school or enlisted in the military. Please contact Pearl Brewer at 655-2578 or email her at: brewerp (valley.kl2.co.us if you or any- one you know should be displayed on the wall. We are very proud of our graduates ! ! ! ! Help Earn Cash for Mtn. Valley School Our school collects and saves General Mills Box Tops. Our school gets 10 for each Box Top we col- lect. We use this extra money to help purchase classroom play- ground equipment: soccer balls, basetldoalls, jump ropes, Frisbees, hoola hoops, etc. You can find these Box Tops for Education on hun- dreds of General Mills products. Turn in the Box Tops to the school; your help is really appreciated.
