,Novel Farming In San Luis Valley.
Right m the heart of the mountains of
southern Colorado occurs a wide open
plain known as the San Luis valley. It
is as level as a floor to the eye, but in
reality it has,a fall of from 2 to 8 feet to
the mile. This plain is very fertile when
water is applied, and contains, as esti-
mated 600 er more square miles of coun-
try which can be cultivated. Like other
land in the arid section, it must be irri-
gated to be successfully farmed, but it is
particularly remarkable for the quality
it posse~es of freely sub-irrigating or
permitting the water running along the
upper side of each section to percolate
through the soil in such a way that no
lmrsonal attention from the farmer, as is
usually necessary in irrigation, is re-
quire& Indeed, the farmers have com-
phdned that their chief objection to the
country is the extreme monotony of the
life there, that there is nothing to do
during the growing Season except to
watch the crops mature. Consequently
many of them go into the mountains and
prospect, or spend the summer picking
berries or fishing, or in other recreations.
Irrigation is by means of a lateral
trench, dug from the main ditch, across
the more elevated side of the ranch, with
perhaps a few others parallel to it. lute
these the water is turned, and works in-
to the sail to such an extent that all
parts of the ranch are thoroughly irri-
gated. The soil is rater a sandy loam of
fairly even depth, beneath which a bed
of hardpan is supposed to exist, which
keeps the water from sinking to such
great depths that the soil cannot absorb
it.
The San Luis valley receives its water
from the Rio Grands which rises in the
mountain country near by. From this
river the necessary ditches are run and
the wat*r conducted to the lands.
For several years the division of hy-
drography of the U. S. geological survey
has been making investigations on the
Rio Grands river in Colorado, to ascer-
tain its discharge, and has established
gaging stations at Del Norte, Los Mago-
tee and @enicero. Investigations for the
further conservation of the river's head
waters are also in progress.--From Bul-
letin United State# Geological Survey
division of Hydrography.
